For the Pinwheel Quilt Lovers from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Pinwheel Quilt quilt is on the ground with concrete pots close to it. The area closest to the bottom is in focus and blurs as you get to the top of the photo.

In this months Make Modern

Inspired by my Field of Flowers quilt from last year’s Great Jelly Roll Bash, this is Wind Echoes. I am totally into pinwheel quilts and have made many different types over the years.

One of my favorite parts of the drive to California is watching the wind turbines scattered across the landscape. These giant windmills spin slowly against layered mountains. They captivate me. It might be because my parents are from Holland, but I love all things windmill-ish and pinwheels are just mini windmills.

Wind Echoes is my version of a Pinwheel Quilt made with a jelly roll. The quilt is hung in the middle of a local garden full of blooming flowers.

Du ...

Jelly Roll Quilt: Sprinkles on Top from Quiltmanufaktur

Fields of Flower – A Colorful Take on a Row Quilt from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

I first released the Fields of Flower quilt as part of the Great Jelly Roll Bash in 2024. I can’t believe it has already been six months! Jelly Roll Day falls on the third Saturday of September, and since I’m all about the quilting life, celebrating a quilting holiday makes perfect sense, I always throw a party for the occasion. But it just hit me—I haven’t shared Fields of Flower my row quilt on the blog yet!

Me and my Fields of Flowers row quilt. I am over it, holding the top edge so it is hanging.

One reason for the delay? This quilt is BIG. It wasn’t quilted initially, but that changed for QuiltCon ...

Making Progress on the Bird Quilt from From My Carolina Home

When I was at retreat, my main project was to complete the design and assemble the quilt using the small bird panels. When I packed this up a couple of months ago, I had the jelly roll picked out and the main design idea. Here’s where I left off in April.

Before retreat, I decided to make this a mixed technique quilt and add some embroidery. So I got out my rayon threads, found some bird designs and stitched out three.

I changed the colors a bit, making the birds more true to life. Here, I made this one ...

All Quilt Projects, Great and Small from Quilting Studio Adventures

The end of the year means two things: wrapping up current projects and planning projects for 2024.  Sew Powerful purses are at the top of the 2024 list.  But I cannot stop myself from starting new quilts.  Look at this pattern by Robin Pickens.  The first real modern design I did was Double Plus Good by Rossi Hutchinson, back in 2009.  And look where I am today with Definite Plus, another plus quilt! Its hard to see the jelly roll next to a cream and grey, but these are the fabrics for this quilt.  It's snowy and a major ...

Projects - Past, Present, and Future from Quilting Studio Adventures

This is an organizational post.  I’m losing track of what I’ve done, what I’m working on, and what I want to do. I loved so much how the small backpack - Sew Sweetness Park Sloan pattern - turned out that I made the bigger version.  What I’ve discovered is that this bag is not cross body for me - instead it is over one shoulder, which works fine. The  other discovery is that unlike other back packs, this one is not meant to carry heavy books.  It can.  But my great niece is using hers as a dance bag ...

Part 6 -- Dresden Star Tutorials from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Time to share the last steps -- adding borders and some quilting ideas!

I added three borders to my finished top -- first border is the background fabric and cut 2" wide to finish at 1 1/2".    Second border used up all my leftovers from the layer cake (plus a couple add-ins because it was pretty tight) -- it's cut 3" wide to finish at 2 1/2".  The third border is the background fabric and cut 4" wide to finish at 3 1/2" wide.

The layer cake leftovers could be pieced together with straight seams but for the fun ...

Another Rug Finished from Alamosa Quilter

Despite the assistance of my feline "helper," I was able to finish a second rug last weekend.

Ms. Spooky Boo (a cat) "helping" me sew the rug

I was a little uncomfortable with how close her tail was to the needle, but we managed! Here is the finished rug. It's the original Jelly Roll Rug pattern.

finished jelly roll rug using Night Breeze 2 1/2" strips

I used one of the new packages of 2 1/2" strips I've gotten in my shop recently from Wilmington Fabrics. What I like about Wilmington is that they have pre-cuts that are collection specific just like most other fabric companies, but they also have pre-cuts that are color specific. None of ...
